Australia Eases Travel Warnings for Qatar and UAE Amid Evolving Middle East Tensions
Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade revises advice from 'Reconsider travel' to 'Exercise high degree of caution' following military actions.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has lowered its travel risk rating for Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), shifting advice from 'Level Three - Reconsider your need to travel' to 'Level Two - Exercise a high degree of caution'. The revised guidance was issued on Thursday.
These Gulf states, which include major hubs like Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Doha, serve as critical stopover points for Australian travelers heading to Europe and are also popular destinations in their own right. The reassessment comes after a period of heightened risk, particularly following military actions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran in February, which triggered broader regional conflict.
While acknowledging that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has led to an unpredictable security situation, DFAT's Smartraveller service noted that the direct risk to tourists in Qatar and the UAE has diminished. However, the department emphasized that the region remains volatile, with the potential for escalation and further attacks.
"We now advise exercise a high degree of caution due to the threat of terrorism and the unpredictable security situation in the region," the advisory stated. "Military strikes and reprisal attacks have occurred across parts of the Middle East region in recent days."
Australians in the region are urged to prioritize their safety, monitor developments closely, and adhere to the advice provided by local authorities. Smartraveller recommended staying aware of surroundings, avoiding locations with a high risk of being targeted, and steering clear of military sites, government buildings, and energy infrastructure, which may not always be clearly signposted. The advisory also noted an increased risk of attacks on U.S. interests globally.
Travel disruptions, including potential flight cancellations and airspace closures, remain a possibility. Dubai International Airport, a key transit point, experienced retaliatory Iranian drone and missile strikes early in the conflict, and while commercial flights have resumed, occasional delays persist. Smartraveller advised travelers to verify airport and airline operations, as well as border crossing statuses, before commencing their journeys.
The threat of terrorism is ongoing, with DFAT warning that attacks could occur without warning. Travelers are advised to avoid venues frequented by foreigners, tourists, or large crowds, and to follow local authorities' guidance in the event of a security incident.
