Australia Considers Reusable Cup Mandates, Hospitality Industry Cites Cost Concerns

Hospitality figures in New South Wales, Australia, are voicing strong opposition to proposed regulations that would mandate the acceptance of reusable cups by food service businesses. Critics argue the changes could impose significant additional costs and logistical challenges on businesses already facing economic pressures.

Under the proposed laws, food service businesses across NSW would be required to accept customers' reusable cups starting in 2028. Additionally, larger food service establishments would need to provide their own reusable cup or mug options to customers from 2030.

A spokesperson for NSW Climate Change Minister Penny Sharpe stated that the plastic reduction plan and associated laws have undergone three years of consultation. The spokesperson clarified that small businesses would be exempt from the requirement to offer a reusable cup service, though they would still be obligated to accept reusable cups brought by customers.

Industry representatives have raised questions about the practical implementation of these regulations, particularly for larger businesses. Concerns include managing the return, cleaning, and replacement of reusable cups provided through a scheme.

Marino Plagiotis, owner of Elixir Sabor cafe, expressed apprehension about the potential financial burden and operational complexities. "We don't want to absorb any more costs than we already are," Plagiotis told The Daily Telegraph. He further questioned the logistics of cup collection from customers and the potential need for deposit systems, describing the proposal as "a logistical nightmare for people in a rush."

Wes Lambert, chief executive of the Australian Restaurant and Cafe Association, echoed these sentiments, criticizing the proposal as indicative of a government that misunderstands the realities of small businesses. "To be able to replace millions and millions of disposable coffee cups with reusable coffee cups, it's just operationally not possible," Lambert stated. He added that it would be "impossible for businesses to absorb additional expenses."

Daily Mail has reached out to the office of NSW Premier Chris Minns for comment.
