Austin Reaves' Praise for Victor Wembanyama Draws Ire from Lakers Fans

Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves has ignited criticism from his own fanbase after publicly praising San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama. The comments came in response to a question posed by the NBA's official X account, asking players who they believed deserved recognition.

While many players highlighted underappreciated athletes, Reaves selected Wembanyama, stating, "I think Wemby. Everything that, you know, he’s gonna get, already has gotten, is well-deserved."

This endorsement has not sat well with a segment of Lakers fans, particularly given the upcoming NBA season and the competitive rivalry between the Lakers and the Spurs in the Western Conference. Online reactions included disbelief and negative remarks, with some users questioning Reaves' choice and expressing frustration.

Some of the backlash stems from the implication that Wembanyama's future accomplishments, which Reaves acknowledged, will likely come at the Lakers' expense. Fans also noted that Wembanyama already receives significant attention from the NBA and mainstream media, making him an unusual choice for an 'underrated' or 'underappreciated' player.

Reaves will have an opportunity to demonstrate his commitment to the Lakers and quell fan concerns when the two teams face off for the first time on November 27.
