Austin Reaves Powers Lakers Past Clippers in Early Season Clash
Guard's strong second-half performance secures victory and keeps Los Angeles undefeated.
Austin Reaves provided the offensive spark the Los Angeles Lakers needed, scoring 28 points and dishing out 9 assists to lead them to a 125-117 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night. The win moved the Lakers to a 2-0 record early in the season.
For a significant portion of the game, the Lakers appeared to be heading for their first loss, with superstar Luka Doncic struggling to find his offensive rhythm. The Clippers, featuring former Lakers Rui Hachimura and Brook Lopez, held their own for much of the contest.
However, with the game tied at 64 at halftime and the Lakers holding only a slim 73-72 lead early in the third quarter, Reaves took control. He initiated a pivotal 16-4 run that ultimately decided the outcome.
The surge began with Reaves converting a difficult layup over Isaiah Jackson, followed by assists to Walker Kessler for an alley-oop dunk and Matisse Thybulle for a corner three-pointer. Reaves then personally scored the next nine points, extending the Lakers' lead to 89-76, their largest at that juncture.
Reaves tallied 13 points and 3 assists in the third quarter alone, contributing significantly to his final scoring total. Although the Clippers managed to cut the deficit to 120-113 late in the fourth quarter, the Lakers maintained their advantage to secure the win.
Walker Kessler also had a strong performance, finishing with 22 points, 8 rebounds, 6 blocked shots, and 3 steals. Doncic concluded the game with 23 points, 7 assists, and 6 rebounds. Brook Lopez contributed 22 points and 4 rebounds off the bench for the Clippers, while Rui Hachimura added 16 points and 6 rebounds against his former team. Darius Garland led the Clippers in scoring with 26 points and 6 assists.
Reaves continued his efficient play, shooting 10 of 13 from the field, including 3 of 5 from three-point range, and making 5 of 6 free throws.
