Austin Homeowner Sparks Protests After Parking Dispute Escalates

A parking dispute outside a Texas home has escalated into protests after the homeowner reportedly boasted about paying $1.5 million for her property while confronting a student. The incident occurred on East 9th Street in Austin, near Huston-Tillotson University, a historically Black college.

The row began when a student, identified only as Bri, reportedly confronted a couple who were allegedly leaving messages on cars, instructing drivers not to park in front of their residence. Footage of the confrontation, captured by the student, went viral online.

In the video, the student can be heard questioning the couple about their right to reserve parking. The exchange intensified when the woman stated, "We paid $1.5 million for our house, y’all’s graduation rates are 25 percent." The student responded by noting the historically Black nature of the neighborhood, to which the homeowner replied, "This is our neighborhood."

The student accused the homeowner of asserting privilege and making racist remarks. She claimed the couple was harassing Black students and professors who attempted to park in the area, a practice that had been common for years without complaint from previous neighbors.

Following the circulation of the video, students and community members organized protests outside the home over the weekend. Demonstrators held signs and chanted slogans such as, "You bought a house, not our history, East Austin is ours." Police were present at the demonstrations, which remained peaceful.

The City of Austin's Transportation and Public Works Department clarified parking regulations for East 9th Street, stating that public parking is permitted along the curb, with exceptions for areas like driveways and intersections. The department confirmed that drivers are allowed to park on the blocks in question.

The incident has drawn widespread reaction online, with many users expressing solidarity with the student and condemning the homeowner's alleged comments and actions.
