Austin Butler and Danny Ramirez Film 'Miami Vice '85' in New Jersey
The upcoming film, slated for a 2028 release, is a remake of the popular 1980s series.
Austin Butler was recently seen filming scenes for the upcoming movie remake "Miami Vice '85" in New Jersey. The actor, 35, was dressed as Detective James 'Sonny' Crockett, sporting the character's signature white suit paired with a mint-blue shirt and black Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses. His hair was slicked back for the role.
Butler was joined on set by co-star Danny Ramirez, 34, who plays a yet-to-be-specified role and was seen in a light grey suit and white button-up shirt. Ramirez also wore dark sunglasses and a black belt.
The film, directed by Joseph Kosinski and scripted by Dan Gilroy, is scheduled to premiere on May 19, 2028. Michael B. Jordan is set to star as Detective Ricardo 'Rico' Tubbs.
Universal Pictures unveiled first-look promotional images for the movie on Monday, announcing "Miami Vice ’85 - now in production." The supporting cast includes Alden Ehrenreich, Andrew Schulz, Camila Morrone, Walton Goggins, John Leguizamo, Andre Holland, Michael Irby, and Whitney Peak.
The original "Miami Vice" television series aired on NBC for five seasons between 1984 and 1989, starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover Miami detectives. A previous film adaptation in 2006, starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell, did not achieve significant success.
In 2022, Butler starred as Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann's biopic "Elvis." He later shared that the intense role led him to feel disconnected from his own identity. Butler also recounted a health scare following the film's completion, where he was hospitalized with a virus that mimicked appendicitis, stating his body had shut down after the demanding production.
Despite the challenges of embodying Elvis, Butler expressed his admiration for the late musician, finding his music comforting and noting a personal connection due to the passing of both their mothers at age 23.
