A Melbourne-based blogger and marketing professional, Emilia Rossi, has shared her extensive weight loss journey, detailing how she shed 43 kilograms (95 pounds) after spending over $19,000 on various methods. Rossi, 44, emphasized that lasting results were achieved not through a single 'quick fix,' but through a multi-faceted approach that addressed diet, exercise, and underlying health concerns.
Rossi's weight peaked at 104 kilograms (229 pounds) in mid-2021, following the birth of her second child, lockdowns, mild postnatal depression, low iron levels, reduced mobility, and stress from a job redundancy. She described feeling exhausted, uncomfortable, and angry with herself, noting that even simple actions like getting up from the floor became difficult.
Trial and Error in Weight Loss
Over a two-year period, Rossi experimented with numerous strategies. These included weight loss programs, meal delivery services, consultations with dietitians and medical professionals, gym classes, strength training, a temporary gastric balloon, and eventually the prescription GLP-1 medication Wegovy. Initially, her efforts to lose weight progressed slowly, moving from 104 kilograms to about 84 kilograms, before accelerating from 80 kilograms to her current weight of 60.9 kilograms (134 pounds).
The gastric balloon, which remained in her stomach for four months, helped her understand portion control, but Rossi stated it was not the key to long-term success. She found that while exercise had always been manageable, weight loss was inconsistent unless her food intake and appetite were properly managed.
Rossi highlighted that her journey began with addressing persistent low iron levels and a weak hip from childbirth. Once these issues improved, her energy and exercise capacity significantly increased. She concluded that no single method was effective on its own and that a combination of approaches was necessary.
Dietary Adjustments and Routine
Rossi explained that her weight gain was a specific consequence of her post-birth period, during which she experienced exhaustion, overwhelm, and used food as a comfort mechanism, particularly late-night takeaway. Her current dietary focus is on smaller portions, higher protein intake, and utilizing food as fuel rather than an emotional coping strategy.
She aims for simplicity in her diet, often eating similar meals that are colorful and textured. Breakfast typically consists of scrambled eggs, sometimes with toast, or a homemade green protein shake with berries. For lunch and dinner, she often relies on meal kits featuring protein like chicken or meat, cooked vegetables, and black rice. Snacks include dark chocolate, half an avocado, or nuts. Rossi avoids alcohol and consumes one espresso daily. Her meals consistently include protein, and she utilizes pre- and post-workout shakes when exercising. Foods she now avoids include anything too greasy, salty, or sweet, as they make her feel unwell, and heavy items like bread or pasta.
The Central Role of Strength Training
Before her weight loss, Rossi exercised regularly but lacked energy and mobility, largely due to her iron deficiency and hip issues. She now engages in gym classes about four times a week, incorporating mid- to high-intensity strength work and cardio. She emphasized a strong focus on strength training, aiming not just to lose weight but to become leaner and stronger.
Her training sessions, lasting 45-60 minutes, burn approximately 430-500 calories. She maintains a high daily step count and consistent movement. Rossi believes training was crucial for preserving muscle mass, supporting her body during weight loss, and avoiding rapid weight loss at the expense of strength.
Medication as a Supportive Tool
Rossi acknowledged that medication, specifically Wegovy, played a role in her journey but was not a definitive solution. She stated the medication helped reduce her appetite and curb constant thoughts about food, making portion control and avoiding overeating easier. She used weight loss injections for over two years under medical supervision, noting that she is now transitioning to the maintenance phase and learning to manage her body's response without the same level of appetite support.
She stressed that weight loss medications are prescription-only and require guidance from a qualified healthcare professional to assess individual suitability based on medical circumstances.
Beyond Physical Changes
Rossi reports feeling re-energized and clear-headed, experiencing a significant improvement in her body composition, feeling leaner and stronger rather than just smaller. Her mobility has improved, allowing for more intense exercise and comfortable daily activities. Unexpected physical changes included needing smaller clothing sizes across the board, including shoes, and resizing rings and glasses due to a reduction in body size. She also noted the simple satisfaction of being able to wrap a towel completely around her body with room to spare as a daily reminder of her transformation.
Overcoming the 'Quick Fix' Myth
Rossi urges individuals not to become discouraged by initial failures, emphasizing that weight is influenced by multiple factors including willpower, appetite, hormones, energy levels, iron status, stress, movement, and food habits. She advises prioritizing strength training and body composition over solely focusing on scale numbers, noting that becoming stronger significantly impacted her appearance and overall well-being.
Regarding weight loss injections, Rossi stated her experience did not align with the 'quick fix' narrative. She believes the medication was a helpful tool but did not perform the work independently. Her success required consistent training, a focus on protein, medical collaboration, mindful food choices, addressing health issues, and sustained effort over a prolonged period. The total financial investment, including injections, medical appointments, meal support, gym memberships, personal training, the gastric balloon, and replacing clothing, amounted to at least $19,000. She views medication as one component of a larger, supervised plan rather than a standalone solution.
Rossi's motivation stemmed from a desire to return to her authentic self, feeling re-energized, confident, and capable of fully enjoying activities like dancing, which she had previously found challenging. This journey, she explained, provided not just weight loss but also increased energy, confidence, and a greater desire to live life more fully.
