Aussie Expat Advocates for Overseas Relocation Amidst Cost of Living Crisis
An Australian living in Thailand shares his experience of a significantly lower cost of living and launches a service to help others make the transition.
Jay Houston, an Australian expatriate living in Thailand, has highlighted the financial benefits of relocating overseas, stating that his rent is now a quarter of what he paid in Australia, while offering a higher quality of life for his money.
Mr. Houston, 50, who resides in a condominium with two pools, reports his monthly expenses, including rent, utilities, and Wi-Fi, total approximately $1,800. He described his rent at $630 per month, with power bills around $60, water at $4, and Wi-Fi at $2.
"This is my office, I'm in no hurry to leave it," Houston told 7News, speaking from his poolside location. "I finish (work) by 2pm and then hit the beaches... I've got the best half of my life ahead of me."
He is able to travel in and out of Thailand frequently under a multi-entry retirement visa. Inspired by his own initial challenges with selecting appropriate medical insurance, Houston has established an online business to guide other Australians through the processes of obtaining insurance, visas, and housing in Thailand.
Recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicates a growing trend of Australians seeking opportunities abroad due to rising living costs. The number of Australians holding multiple jobs has surpassed one million for the first time. In August, full-time employment saw a decrease of 6,000, while part-time employment increased by 39,000.
KPMG chief economist Brendan Rynne commented that these figures suggest a weakening economy. "Households are still feeling the pinch of higher inflation," Rynne stated. "Households are scrambling to find more income to help cover their rising day-to-day expenses and future increases in mortgage payments."
