Aung San Suu Kyi, the detained former leader of Myanmar, has been seen in photographs during her first confirmed meeting with an outside group in two and a half years. The images, released by the military government, show Suu Kyi meeting with a delegation from the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC).
Suu Kyi was taken into custody shortly after the armed forces deposed her government in 2021. She was subsequently sentenced to 33 years in prison on charges that are widely considered to be politically motivated, though her sentence has since been reduced and she has been moved to house arrest.
Despite repeated assurances from the military authorities that Aung San Suu Kyi is alive and well, concrete evidence has been scarce. Her son, Kim Aris, has recently led an international campaign calling for proof of life for the 81-year-old democracy icon.
The meeting with the ICRC delegation marks her first confirmed contact with anyone outside the government in nearly four years. Photographs from the meeting depict Suu Kyi appearing relaxed and healthy. However, no specific details regarding her health or the content of their discussions have been disclosed.
