Auburn Stuns No. 1 Georgia with Last-Second Field Goal
Alex McPherson's kick as time expired seals upset victory, marking the second consecutive week the top-ranked team has fallen.
Auburn kicker Alex McPherson secured a stunning 27-24 upset victory over No. 1 Georgia with a 34-yard field goal as time expired on Saturday. The loss for Georgia marks the second consecutive week the top-ranked team in the AP Top 25 has been defeated by an unranked opponent, following then-No. 1 Texas' loss to Oklahoma the previous Saturday.
Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton led his team on a crucial game-tying touchdown drive in the fourth quarter, but a fumble with less than a minute remaining ended their hopes of taking the lead. Stockton lost the ball on a run from the Auburn 46-yard line with 58 seconds left, with Auburn safety Sylvester Smith-Reed recovering the fumble. A subsequent roughing-the-passer penalty against Georgia's Gabe Harris Jr. ultimately set up McPherson's decisive kick.
Auburn's offensive success was largely driven by quarterback Byrum Brown, who rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries, while also contributing a scoring pass. The Tigers' victory snapped Georgia's nine-game winning streak against Auburn and ended the Bulldogs' streak of 53 consecutive wins over unranked opponents. It also likely signals the end of Georgia's brief one-week tenure at the top of the AP Top 25.
Despite trailing 14-0 early, Auburn responded by scoring the next 24 points. The Bulldogs managed to rally in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 24 after a 42-yard field goal by Peyton Woodring and a 94-yard touchdown drive capped by Stockton's pass to London Humphreys. However, Stockton's performance was marred by two interceptions, doubling his season total, and the team was also hindered by three personal foul penalties.
Georgia initially appeared dominant, building a 14-0 lead despite an early injury to Stockton, who briefly left the game after hitting his helmet on the turf on the first play. Backup Ryan Puglisi completed three passes for 41 yards before Dwight Phillips scored on a 15-yard run. Stockton returned and threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Lawson Luckie to extend the lead.
Auburn countered with a physical rushing attack led by Brown. The Tigers scored 17 unanswered points to close the first half, including a 9-yard touchdown pass from Brown to Chas Nimrod. Jeremiah Cobb also contributed as a complementary running back. The Tigers' win marked the first time a top-ranked team had lost a home game to an unranked opponent since LSU fell to Arkansas in 2007.
