Auburn men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl on Friday described the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk as an "assassination," saying opponents turned to violence because "they couldn't beat him" in debate. Pearl made the remarks during an appearance on OutKick's podcast "Don't @ Me" with Dan Dakich while offering a tribute to Kirk, who was shot and killed at a campus event in Utah on Wednesday.

Pearl, who called Kirk "a man of faith," said Kirk was leading what he described as a revival among young conservative Christians involved in politics and civic life. "The opposition is pulling farther apart from us and getting more violent," Pearl said on the program. "I think the reason they're getting more violent is because, like Charlie Kirk proved every time he debated and had discussion, he was on the side of right, he was on the side of good... and they couldn't beat him. So they killed him. They murdered him. They assassinated him."

Pearl said Kirk's influence would persist despite his death and urged followers to carry on his work. "He is going to live on through all of us that followed him, that learn from him," Pearl said. He added that Kirk "had a different gift, and he'll be sorely missed." Pearl's comments followed expressions of shock and prayer from figures across athletics and politics in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.

Authorities in Utah arrested a suspect, identified as Tyler Robinson, in connection with the shooting. President Donald Trump said on Friday morning's "Fox & Friends" that a suspect was in custody. Police statements since the shooting have confirmed the arrest but have not released a full account of a motive.

Kirk was the founder and chief executive of Turning Point USA, a conservative youth organization that has been active on college campuses and in Republican politics. He frequently appeared on conservative media and at political events, and his death has drawn significant attention from national leaders and commentators. Pearl described Kirk as a figure who energized young people on issues including faith, family and the right to life.

Pearl's remarks continued a pattern of public tributes from sports figures who commented on Kirk's death. He framed the killing as part of a broader political and cultural struggle, saying opponents resorted to violence because they could not defeat Kirk in debate. Those comments were delivered as personal remembrance and political criticism on a program known for opinion and commentary.

Investigators have said little about the suspected motive while the case remains under active investigation. Officials have urged the public to avoid speculation as they collect evidence and interview witnesses. The arrest took place within days of the shooting, and authorities have indicated more details will be released as they are verified.

The killing has intensified debate over political rhetoric and campus security as officials and commentators weigh the implications for political discourse and public safety. Political leaders, including Trump, have publicly acknowledged the arrest and condemned the violence, while law enforcement continues its inquiry into the circumstances that led to the shooting.
