Attorney General Skeptical of Investigating Russian Oligarch's Wedding Gift to Trump Jr.

Attorney General Todd Blanche indicated Tuesday that an investigation into a Russian oligarch's alleged financial contribution to Donald Trump Jr.'s wedding festivities is unlikely. The oligarch, Umar Kremlev, has ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"The president doesn't know who this person is. I think other members of the family don't know who this person is," Blanche told reporters during a White House press briefing. "Am I investigating what?"

Reports from nonprofit investigative outlet ProPublica, corroborated by three individuals familiar with the event, stated that Kremlev footed a significant portion of the bill for wedding celebrations involving Donald Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina Anderson, in late May. These expenses reportedly included the rental of a private island and a fireworks display, with payments originating from an entity associated with the International Boxing Association, where Kremlev serves as president. The International Olympic Committee suspended the IBA in 2019 due to financial and organizational issues, including concerns about corruption.

The Trump family has largely denied knowledge of Kremlev. Donald Trump stated he does not personally know Kremlev and emphasized that the wedding and afterparty were at different locations and times. "Not a big deal!" he added regarding the financial contribution.

Melania Trump's office released a statement clarifying that she did not attend the wedding or subsequent celebrations and has no relationship with Kremlev, nor was she involved in the financial planning. Eric Trump's spokesperson also stated that he has no business relationship with and does not know Kremlev.

Anderson, in an Instagram post, described Kremlev's contribution as an "extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend." She expressed regret that the event was being politicized, stating there was "NO CONSPIRACY, NO MYSTERY."

Despite the family's denials and Blanche's skepticism, Democrats on Capitol Hill have called for investigations. Rep. Robert Garcia, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, sent letters to Trump Jr. and the White House requesting that all records related to the event be preserved. Garcia expressed concern that accepting such a gift from an individual with close ties to Putin could indicate pay-to-play schemes or foreign intelligence infiltration.

FBI Director Kash Patel, when questioned by Sen. Richard Blumenthal about potential intelligence compromises related to the report, stated that the FBI would examine any information brought to their attention but claimed he had not read the specific report. Kremlev's press office told ProPublica that Kremlev and Trump Jr. have a friendly relationship, first meeting several years ago, and that Kremlev has not discussed political matters with his American acquaintances.
