Police Scotland has received reports of athletes going missing in the aftermath of the Commonwealth Games, which concluded on Sunday. The Games, which ran for 11 days, featured 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories.

Organizers stated that athletes were expected to depart the Games according to the Glasgow 2026 length of stay policy, with accommodation ending two nights after each athlete's sport concluded. A spokeswoman for Glasgow 2026 confirmed they are working with partners, including Police Scotland, Border Force, and UK Visas & Immigration, to ensure a secure conclusion to the event.

This situation echoes a past incident in 2014 when two Ugandan rugby players disappeared after the Commonwealth Games. They were later found playing rugby in Cardiff. One of those players, Philip Pariyo, was subsequently sentenced to four and a half years in prison for rape.

The Home Office reportedly conducts enhanced checks on individuals before major sporting events like the Games, in collaboration with event organizers to strengthen entry controls into the UK. Any future asylum claims are evaluated on their individual merits, based on case facts and available evidence.
