Astros Players Express Frustration with Home Crowd Boos and Sparse Attendance

Houston Astros players have expressed frustration with their home crowd following a sparse attendance and vocal booing during the team's opening game of the American League Wild Card series against the Chicago White Sox. The Astros, who entered the postseason with an 81-81 record, lost the game 6-3 to the White Sox.

Despite an announced attendance of 34,011 at Daikin Park, the stadium appeared significantly emptier than capacity. The crowd also booed the team throughout the game, drawing criticism from players.

Reliever Bennett Sousa, who was booed after throwing two sliders in the dirt in the seventh inning, suggested that the team's recent history of deep playoff runs may have led to spoiled expectations from the fanbase. "The fans here are definitely spoiled with a lot of ALCS and World Series runs, and we have to earn that right to bring this team back to that position," Sousa stated. He contrasted the current reception with earlier playoff appearances, noting the significant difference a loud crowd can make.

"As a team and as a staff, we know how we feel about our guys. And if that's felt differently from the outside — that's OK. We can live with that," Sousa added. "But as a team, we know that we lay it on the line every day. We've been working our ass off. We've been playing hard. We got in the playoffs. We just really need the support of our fans."

Star player Yordan Alvarez acknowledged the crowd's reaction. "It's what we expected. Frustrated we weren't able to get them the victory that we wanted to give them, but tomorrow we're going to try and go out and give them the win they deserve," he said through an interpreter.

Christian Walker, who made a crucial throwing error in the first inning, echoed Sousa's sentiments. "Each year is its own thing. You can't assume a team is going to win 100 games every year. It's really, really hard to get to the postseason. We had to do a lot of things right along the way. We had to face a lot of adversity," Walker commented.

He continued, "It's extremely frustrating as a home player. We're here, playing at home; we need cheers. We need energy. We don't need boos. What purpose does that serve in that moment? Whatever fans are feeling, we're feeling it tenfold. We're the ones out there. We're the ones in the fight. We worked our butts off this whole season to put ourselves in this spot, and for guys to get booed, it's frustrating."

The Astros are now facing a do-or-die Game 2 against the White Sox, with pitcher Hunter Brown set to start for Houston against Chicago's Sean Burke.
