Aston Villa has completed the signing of midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolves for a reported £38 million. The Brazil international joins Villa Park for an initial fee of £34 million, with a further £4 million contingent on add-ons.
Gomes' move to Aston Villa comes after his former teammate, Amadou Onana, suffered a serious knee injury while representing Belgium at the World Cup, prompting the club to seek midfield reinforcements. Villa also recently finalized a club-record deal exceeding £50 million for Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi, beating Newcastle United to his signature. Additionally, the club has seen Youri Tielemans sold to Manchester United for £35 million, and Morgan Rogers is reportedly set to depart following an £117 million agreement with Chelsea.
Gomes made 41 appearances for Wolves during the previous season, where he was named Player of the Year despite the team finishing at the bottom of the Premier League. In total, he played 130 matches for Wolves, scoring seven goals after his arrival from Flamengo in 2023.
Wolves technical director Matt Jackson commented on the transfer, stating that Gomes is a model professional who deserves his success. He added that while the club is sorry to see him leave, they must make responsible decisions to ensure the club's collective strength, a necessity for clubs operating without unlimited resources. Jackson noted that this approach is a natural part of football and one that their fans have consistently understood.
