Aston Villa achieved their first victory of the season with a hard-fought 3-1 win over Club Brugge in their Europa Conference League opener. The English club established a commanding lead by halftime, with John McGinn opening the scoring to become Villa's all-time record European goalscorer with 12 goals. Emi Buendía extended the lead, and a Nicolas Jackson goal, capitalizing on a misjudgment by Brugge's goalkeeper Yann Sommer, put Villa firmly in control.

Despite the strong first half, the visitors faced pressure after the break. A penalty converted by Nicolo Tresoldi, awarded after a handball by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, reduced the deficit. Tresoldi later hit the post, contributing to an anxious final half-hour for Villa.

The match required Aston Villa to demonstrate grit and resilience, qualities manager Unai Emery and his squad have consistently shown. This victory, similar to a below-par 1-0 win against Bologna last season that ignited a successful run, provides a foundation for the team in this new era. Emery has integrated 10 new players into his system since last season, and the win in Brugge offers an early test for their cohesion.

"It's a new Villa and it was a big test for the new players to dig in," McGinn told UEFA. "It was Joao Gomes and George Hemmings' first Champions League game. It's not easy to go away at a place like this in difficult weather conditions. Club Brugge were pushing and pushing and pushing and we had to stand strong. We managed to do that."

McGinn added, "It was so important to show a real gritty performance and get a victory at a very, very tough place to play."
