Aston Villa Manager Unai Emery Comments on Financial Fair Play Amid Manchester City Verdict
Emery suggests that many clubs have inflated their budgets, impacting financial balance in the league.
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has become the first Premier League boss to comment on the recent verdict against Manchester City for alleged financial rule breaches. Emery stated that many clubs have "inflated their budgets," contributing to an imbalance in the league's financial landscape.
Manchester City were found by an independent Premier League panel to have illegally channeled over £900 million into the club, with a significant portion of that amount coming from ownership topping up commercial partnerships. The club is appealing this verdict. Emery suggested that the issue of inflated budgets has been known and that it is now coming to light, leading to a decline.
"Financial Fair Play seeks a financial balance so that what you generate is spent and there isn't inflation," Emery told Spanish publication Diario de Sevilla. "Yes, many other clubs have inflated their budgets, and now it's coming to light, and naturally there's a decline."
Emery expressed sympathy for the situation, acknowledging City's on-field success under manager Pep Guardiola. "That's something that the courts and those responsible will have to decide. I feel sorry because of how that team played. With Guardiola, there were times when they were unmatched."
Reports indicate that Manchester City intends to argue their innocence by asserting that the government of Abu Dhabi, rather than the club's owners, provided funding for certain sponsorship deals, which the club may contend were not legitimate.
Emery's comments come as the English football league navigates what is considered its most significant modern scandal. Clubs' spending power is typically tied to their revenue, and while Aston Villa's co-owners are billionaires, the club has faced its own financial regulations issues with UEFA. Villa is currently in Marbella, Spain, for a training camp.
