Ash Gardner Reflects on Public Scrutiny After Personal Scandal

Australian cricket vice-captain Ash Gardner has acknowledged that the public nature of her personal life, including an affair with teammate Georgia Voll during the breakdown of her marriage, has negatively impacted her reputation. However, Gardner expressed confidence that her teammates still view her as a good person who made poor decisions.

Gardner, 29, stated in an interview with The Courier Mail that she was surprised by the public's intense focus on the situation and disappointed that the controversy overshadowed Australia's Twenty20 World Cup victory. "My reputation has been tarnished with the public," Gardner said, "But I guess something that I always try to strive to do when representing any team that I play in is be the best teammate that I can, and hopefully show what this team means to me when I'm playing for them."

She added, "I know deep down [my teammates] still think that I'm a good person and I've just made some poor decisions. I guess that's the best thing, and being able to reflect on that has been really important for me."

Gardner and her estranged wife, Monica Wright, married in April 2025. The relationship reportedly began to break down later that year, with Gardner's relationship with Voll allegedly starting during the 2025 World Cup in India. The controversy became public in July when Wright shared a photo of Voll on Instagram, accusing her wife of infidelity.

Gardner and Voll were in Europe between the T20 World Cup and The Hundred when the scandal erupted. Gardner described her surprise at the situation becoming so public, stating, "I certainly didn't expect the situation to take the path that it did, or to become as public as what it did. But I also understand that everyone has their own way of dealing with difficult situations."

Reflecting on the incident, Gardner conceded she may have underestimated the extent to which the story would spread, acknowledging Wright's perspective. "So for me, it was trying to, I guess, stay positive in what was a pretty tricky time with this being so public and probably going further than maybe what I thought, so maybe that was me being a little bit naive."

The controversy emerged shortly after Australia secured an unbeaten T20 World Cup campaign. Gardner noted her disappointment that the personal issues detracted from the team's success.

Wright had previously questioned Cricket Australia's handling of the situation and Gardner's continued role in senior leadership, suggesting that leaders are expected to uphold a "high moral standard." Concerns were also raised about potential conflicts of interest involving Gardner and Voll.

Cricket Australia stated it had been aware of the situation for months and had implemented measures to manage potential conflicts, including in selection processes. Gardner had publicly thanked the Cricket Australia board for their support of her leadership.

Gardner, who shares Australia's vice-captaincy with Tahlia McGrath under captain Sophie Molineux, acknowledged that while she is consulted on team selections, she would recuse herself from discussions involving Voll. Coach Shelley Nitschke and selector Shawn Flegler are ultimately responsible for selection decisions on tour.

Gardner is set to play in Australia's upcoming series against Bangladesh, with McGrath expected to captain the team.
