Arvell Reese's Dominant Performance Bolsters Giants' Defensive Strategy

Arvell Reese delivered a standout performance in the New York Giants' 36-24 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, demonstrating why the team selected him with the fifth overall pick in the NFL draft to serve as an every-down linebacker. Reese led the Giants with nine tackles, including one for a loss, and contributed three pass breakups along with his first NFL interception.

"He has really taken off," said Giants coach John Harbaugh after the win, which improved the team's record to 3-1. "He was all over the field again. He played great."

Reese's nine tackles followed a career-high 13 tackles the previous week against Tennessee. The Ohio State product was a consistent presence throughout the game against Arizona. "He's playing out of his mind," commented fellow rookie Abdul Carter. Reese credited his success to staying present and maintaining composure, emphasizing a "win-the-game-on-defense mentality" and playing for teammates.

Reese played all 66 defensive snaps, showcasing his readiness for an every-down role. He is part of a promising rookie class for the Giants; No. 10 pick Francis "Sisi" Mauigoa has started every game at right guard, and third-round receiver Malachi Fields recorded his first career touchdown against Arizona.

The Giants' defense adjusted its strategy against the Cardinals, with defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson blitzing quarterback Jacoby Brissett on 53.8% of drop-backs. This pressure led to Brissett throwing three interceptions, including one returned 98 yards for a touchdown by Deonte Banks. "The thinking was to hurry him up, try to get the ball out of his hand as quick as we could," Harbaugh explained.

Despite the defensive success, the Giants endured a slow start, trailing 14-3 in the first quarter. "We can play so much better," Harbaugh acknowledged.

In other team news, quarterback Jameis Winston finished 18 of 29 for 250 yards and three touchdowns, though he also threw two interceptions. "I’m heating up and I’m starting to get better, better and better," Winston said. "Last week, I was questioning if I could even throw. This week, I’ve got people talking about the Jameis Winston experience again." Harbaugh noted Winston's turnovers as areas needing cleanup.

Center John Michael Schmitz did not start, with Bryan Hudson taking his place, due to Schmitz's limited rest following the birth of his child. "It just made sense," Harbaugh said, adding it was not a long-term change.

Charlie Jones has taken over punt return duties due to Braxton Berrios' foot injury. Jones was promoted from the practice squad to replace Odell Beckham Jr. when the veteran receiver was released last week.

Safety Jason Pinnock left the game with a concussion, potentially creating an opportunity for Ar'Darius Washington. Defensive lineman Chauncey Golston exited with a neck injury.

The Giants will look to extend their current three-game winning streak, which would be their first since late 2023, when they face Washington next weekend. Jayden Daniels is expected to start for the Commanders after recovering from a dislocated left elbow.
