Arteta Warns Young Arsenal Player: 'We're Not in Disneyland!'
Manager Mikel Arteta admonishes 16-year-old Max Dowman for a red card offense, emphasizing the realities of professional football.
Mikel Arteta, manager of Arsenal, has issued a stern warning to 16-year-old player Max Dowman, telling him "we are not in Disneyland" following a red card incident during a Carabao Cup match against Fleetwood. The young player was sent off in the 86th minute for kicking out in retaliation to a challenge, marking his second dismissal of the month after a similar offense while playing for England's Under-19s.
As a result of the red card, Dowman will miss Arsenal's upcoming Premier League matches against Liverpool, Hull City, and Newcastle. The Football Association rejected the club's appeal against the suspension.
Arteta, who was seen speaking to Dowman as he left the field, emphasized the need for players to handle provocation. "You want to always have the best reaction, the beautiful one. But do you want to see the reaction of his team-mates when they have to play with the 10 men, you want to see that? What do you expect?" Arteta questioned.
He further elaborated on the harsh realities of professional football, stating, "We have to be ready for that, this is the environment and this is the reality. Otherwise we are in Disneyland. We are not in Disneyland, we are in the Premier League at this level." Arteta stressed that while the club provides significant support to young players like Dowman, high expectations and accountability are also paramount to ensure fairness for the entire team.
Arteta confirmed he had spoken with Dowman about the incident, acknowledging that he himself has made similar mistakes in his career. "I had a talk with him yesterday,' he said. No issue at all. I've done it, so I try to prevent that. That's why I'm so protective of these things, and especially with young players, because we have made those mistakes. And you know how much you can get punished and how much it can change what happens next."
The manager also expressed his own frustration with the team's loss to Fleetwood, admitting he was "pissed off" after the defeat, highlighting that winning is a key expectation at this level.
