Arteta's Early Arsenal Tactics Included Office Destruction, New Deal Signed
The Arsenal manager revealed he destroyed an office on his first day to foster team unity, as he also commits to a new contract through 2030.
Mikel Arteta, known for his unconventional management style, revealed that his approach began on his very first day as Arsenal manager in December 2019. In an interview with The Athletic, Arteta recounted how he "destroyed" an office at the club's training center, scattering computers and equipment.
Arteta then tasked his staff with reorganizing the space in just two minutes to demonstrate their unity. "I said, 'Listen, this is what I heard. I don’t know if it’s true. But from a lot of different people, the sentiment is that this is how they feel about working in the organisation. I’m here to help you enjoy your profession and your life and the passion that we all share. If you want me to help you to do that, you have two minutes to put this in order and at least to be ready to work together’," Arteta explained. He added that the situation could have ended his managerial career before it truly began if the staff had not responded effectively.
Upon returning, Arteta found the office "immaculate" and the staff ready to listen. He used the moment to emphasize the need for daily collaboration and togetherness to achieve their goals. This incident was part of Arteta's broader strategy to foster an "us-against-the-world" mentality, believing that collective effort could "create a monster."
These methods are seen as a key factor in Arsenal's resurgence under Arteta, transforming the team from tenth place in 2019 to challenging for the Premier League title and reaching the Champions League final. He has committed his life and soul to connecting the club from top to bottom and enjoying the challenging journey.
In addition to these management techniques, Arteta has also agreed to a new contract with Arsenal, reportedly making him the Premier League's highest-paid manager. The deal, which runs until 2030, follows a period of speculation about his future. Arteta expressed his privilege in committing to the club and continuing to work with dedicated individuals.
"It's a privilege to commit my future to the club and to continue to work with exceptional people who want the best for Arsenal," Arteta stated. "This club is unique, its character and the way it makes you feel, and I have a great sense of privilege that our journey together will continue."
He also acknowledged the special bond created with the team and the supporters, looking forward to future achievements. Arteta extended his gratitude to the Kroenke family for their trust and support during this "special period" in the club's history.
Arteta's tenure has seen him implement various unique practices, including the use of speakers during training sessions and bringing a team dog named Win. His contract extension is seen as a significant step in securing the club's long-term stability and continued development under his leadership.
