Arteta Defends Arsenal Staff Cuts Amid Personal Contract Extension
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta addressed recent job cuts and confirmed a retake of the team's squad photo.

Mikel Arteta, Arsenal's manager, has defended the club's decision to eliminate 60 non-playing staff positions, stating that these measures are necessary to "achieve the success we want to create." These redundancies will affect off-field roles and will not impact the coaching staff, backroom teams, community operations, the Arsenal Foundation, or security personnel.
The announcement of the job cuts comes shortly after Arteta himself signed an extended four-year contract valued at approximately £20 million per year. When questioned about the layoffs, Arteta stated that the decision was based on an analysis of the club's operations and the need to "evolve to improve." He added that certain decisions must be made to place individuals in the correct roles and to continue investing in the club's pursuit of success, though he deferred further detailed questions to others.
In separate news, Arteta confirmed that Arsenal will retake its official 2026-27 squad photo due to the initial omission of defender William Saliba. Saliba was absent from the original photoshoot because he was attending a doctor's appointment. This marks the third attempt to capture the team's official image, as previous sessions were canceled due to unforeseen circumstances and commercial obligations.
Arteta commented on Saliba's reaction, noting that the player was not personally responsible for his absence and is otherwise in good spirits, aware of his value to the team and amenable to some lighthearted banter regarding the situation.
