Arteta Addresses Dowman's Red Card, Emphasizes High Standards

Mikel Arteta, the manager, has emphasized that the club operates in a high-stakes environment, not "Disneyland," and that young player Max Dowman will be held to the same standards as the rest of the first-team squad. This comes after Dowman received a red card during a match against Fleetwood.

Arteta revealed he spoke with Dowman on Thursday, stating there were "no issues at all" between them but that he needed to be "very straight" about the expected standards. Dowman, who is 16 years old, also received a red card earlier this month while playing for England U19s, a match that also involved challenges from the United States team.

"They are his age. They are 16 – the same. What is the reaction? That is the level and that is the reaction," Arteta said regarding the red card incident. He also acknowledged the impact of such disciplinary actions on the team, noting that his own reaction to not winning is intense anger. "So, we need to be ready for that. This is the environment and this is the reality, otherwise we are in Disneyland. We are not in Disneyland, we are in the Premier League and this level."

The club appealed the red card decision, but the Football Association (FA) upheld it, a decision Arteta expressed disappointment with. "We look after him so much that you cannot imagine," Arteta added, but stressed that the club will also demand a high level of performance and discipline from him. "But at the same time we are going to demand from him, like everybody else, because he needs to earn the right to play. Because the other boys, what are they going to tell me? You need to be fair."

Arteta concluded by noting the potential for injury, stating, "we are lucky today that he (Dowman) hasn't had a broken foot."
