Arson Attack Claims Four Lives in Waterford; Police Hunt for Suspects
A family was targeted in a pre-dawn petrol bomb attack, leaving parents and two children dead, while two other children fight for their lives. The community has been left shattered by the incident, which follows a history of intimidation against the family.
Authorities are searching for the individual or individuals responsible for a devastating arson attack that killed four members of a family, including two young children, in the Birchwood estate near Waterford city. The incident occurred around 5 a.m. Tuesday when a petrol bomb was reportedly thrown at the family's front door, setting the house ablaze while the occupants slept.
Parents Kim English, in her 30s, and Philip, in his 50s, along with their sons Callum, 12, and Jayden, nine, died in the fire. Two other children from the same family, Nadia and her brother Elliot, are in critical condition at Crumlin Hospital in Dublin. Nadia is on life support.
An Garda Síochána is treating the deaths as murder and believes the fire was started deliberately. Chief Superintendent for Waterford and Kilkenny, Anthony Pettit, stated that the house has been declared a crime scene and is undergoing a technical examination. The investigation is in its early stages, but authorities are exploring the possibility that the attack was linked to a five-figure drug debt, emphasizing that the family was entirely innocent and not responsible for any such debt.
This horrific event follows a pattern of intimidation against the family, which has been ongoing for the past three years. The family had previously reported a paint attack on their car and an attempted arson at their home less than a month prior to Tuesday's fatal incident. Threats against family members had also been made on social media in recent weeks.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos and terror, with one neighbor reporting hearing a loud crash, followed by screams and seeing people engulfed in flames. Another neighbor attempted to rescue the family by climbing over a wall but was unable to enter the house due to the intense smoke.
Local priest Father Gerry Chestnutt described the victims as "nice, nice people, lovely people" and "really good parents." He noted the tight-knit nature of the community, which is devastated by the loss. The family had lived in the estate for several years and were well-liked.
Authorities are appealing for information from anyone who was in the vicinity of Birch Avenue and Birchwood between 4:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. They are particularly interested in any dashcam footage or images from drivers in the area during that time. Information can be provided to the incident room at Waterford Garda Station, the Garda Confidential Line, or any Garda station.
Waterford Fire Service confirmed they were alerted to the fire at 5:13 a.m. and that multiple units responded to the scene. Firefighting operations commenced immediately, and casualties were removed from the two-storey house. The fire was extinguished, and the scene was subsequently handed over to An Garda Síochána.
