Arsenal's Max Dowman Compared to Lamine Yamal by Teammate Mikel Merino

Mikel Merino has drawn a parallel between Arsenal's emerging talent Max Dowman and Barcelona's sensation Lamine Yamal, noting their similar temperaments and readiness for high-pressure situations. Dowman, also 16, recently scored twice for Arsenal in their Carabao Cup third-round victory over Ipswich.

Merino, who plays alongside Dowman at Arsenal and with Yamal for Spain, described the young Arsenal midfielder as an "unbelievable talent." He pointed out that both players possess a strong character, thrive under pressure, and are unfazed by facing established players. "They don't care about the spotlight. They thrive when pressure is at the highest. They are always up for the challenge and they are not shy at all - even facing the biggest names in the game. So, they are very similar," Merino stated.

Merino emphasized that Dowman consistently makes a difference when he plays against more experienced opponents, despite his young age. "He is a big talent and we have to take care of him," Merino added.

The Arsenal first-team players are focused on nurturing Dowman's development and encouraging continuous improvement. "We have to keep pushing him," Merino said. "There is still big room for improvement in a lot of areas, and he knows that. So we are going to be by his side trying to get him to his best level."

Merino also praised the humility and eagerness to learn displayed by Dowman and other young talents. "The good thing with these kind of players - Lamine and Max - is that they are special talents, but at the same time they are very humble. They are always keen to learn and listen to the veterans. That is priceless," he noted. He stressed the importance of supporting young players while also providing constructive challenges for their growth.

Merino also highlighted the performance of 17-year-old Marli Salmon, who impressed at center-back against Ipswich. "In that position as a centre back, you need to be very mature. It's very important that you don't make many mistakes. Every action is crucial," Merino commented, recognizing Salmon's composed display as another sign of emerging talent.

Merino and other senior players, such as Gabriel, aim to share their experience with the younger squad members. "We have been around for a long time! We try to teach them our experience and they are very good at listening," Merino concluded.
