Arsenal Faces Backlash Over £50 Full English Breakfast
Football club ridiculed on social media for the price and presentation of a hospitality breakfast.
Premier League club Arsenal has drawn criticism and mockery on social media for charging £50 for a full English breakfast served in a corporate hospitality area of the Emirates Stadium. The controversy began when social media user Stephen Power, known online as Racing Blogger, shared images of the breakfast from The Heritage hospitality venue.
The plate, which included a fried egg, two sausages, a mushroom, a tomato, a slice of bread, and a cup of beans, was topped with watercress. Power initially described the dish with the caption, "The Arsenal fry-up in the Heritage! £50 fry-up with all the trimmings." The post quickly garnered negative reactions, with one user comparing the offering to a "bigger scam than Man City," referencing the rival club's financial irregularity charges.
Other online comments called the breakfast "pathetic" and questioned the price, with one user asking, "Why is there baby watercress on a fry up? I find that more offensive than the alleged £50." Additional criticisms included observations on "the ruining of football in this country," and comparisons to other expensive hospitality items like "prawn sandwiches."
Despite the online backlash, Power later posted that the breakfast was "banging, proper quality produce, great taste, very enjoyable grub," while acknowledging the humor derived from the negative comments.
The matchday experience at The Heritage package at Arsenal starts at £999, which includes "award-winning cuisine in our exclusive restaurant before watching the match from premium match seats." Another hospitality option, The Touchline, begins at £2,499 and offers seats near the Arsenal bench with access to player warm-ups.
The term "prawn sandwich brigade" has historically been used to describe supporters in corporate hospitality areas, stemming from comments made by former Manchester United captain Roy Keane in 2000, who criticized the perceived lack of atmosphere among some fans at Old Trafford.
Arsenal, who won the Premier League title last season, played Leeds United on Saturday, securing a 2-1 victory. The club has been contacted for comment on the hospitality breakfast pricing.
