Arsenal Defeats Everton, Moves Level Atop Premier League Standings
Goals from Ezri Konsa and Gabriel secure a 2-0 victory for Arsenal, drawing them level on points with Manchester City.
Arsenal secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Everton at the Emirates Stadium, moving level on points with Premier League leaders Manchester City. Center-back partners Ezri Konsa and Gabriel scored the goals, marking personal milestones in the process.
Konsa opened the scoring in the seventh minute, converting from a corner for his first goal since joining Arsenal from Aston Villa. The defender found the net after a deflected header from Gabriel and a touch off the crossbar by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Gabriel sealed the victory in the second half with a header on his 200th Premier League appearance. The goal came from a Ben White cross after substitute Bruno Guimaraes initiated the play. This win ensured Arsenal capitalized on Manchester City's earlier 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.
Mikel Arteta's side has now won seven of their eight top-flight fixtures this season and 11 of 13 games across all competitions. The victory was particularly important as Arsenal had not scored from a set-piece in the league this season prior to Konsa's opener.
Everton had opportunities to equalize, with Thierno Barry and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall missing key chances. Midfielder James Garner also tested Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya early on. The visitors were unfortunate when Barry’s deft finish was saved shortly before halftime.
Arsenal, who were without Bukayo Saka due to a quad issue sustained in midweek, also had a scare when Gabriel required physio treatment in the second half. However, the Brazilian international returned to secure the win.
Everton, who had entered the match with an unbeaten start to their season prior to a loss against Chelsea the previous weekend, slipped to their second consecutive defeat. They have now won just once in their last 21 visits to the Emirates Stadium.
