Arsenal Boss Arteta Addresses Club Job Cuts
Mikel Arteta stated that Arsenal's decision to reduce staff was explained to him as necessary for achieving desired success.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has commented on the club's decision to implement job cuts, stating he was informed that these measures are intended to "achieve the success that we want to create." Chief executive Richard Garlick notified staff this week about the workforce reduction, which is expected to impact approximately seven percent of Arsenal's 871 permanent employees.
The redundancies will affect off-the-field roles across various departments. Positions within the Arsenal Foundation, Arsenal in the Community, and security staff will remain unaffected, as will coaching and performance staff for both the men's and women's teams.
A review of the workforce by an external company was reportedly underway prior to Arsenal winning the Premier League title. The news of the job cuts follows shortly after Arteta signed a new four-year contract, which reportedly includes an increase on his previous £10 million annual salary plus an additional £5 million in bonuses.
When questioned about the redundancies before a recent match, Arteta initially demurred, stating the question was not for him. He then offered a brief explanation, saying, "It was explained to me about the exercise, and the analysis that has been done across the club, and with the intention always to evolve, to improve." He added, "Some decisions have to be taken to put people in the right roles, and keep investing, to achieve what we want to achieve, the success that we want to create."
Arsenal reported record revenues of £691 million for the 2024-25 financial year in February. However, the club also recorded an overall loss of £1.4 million. Operating costs saw an increase to £200.8 million, up from £147.9 million in the preceding financial year.
