Arrest Made in Ohio Teen's Sextortion-Related Suicide
A suspect has been apprehended in the Ivory Coast nearly four years after a 17-year-old boy died by suicide following an online sextortion scheme.
An arrest has been made in the Ivory Coast in connection with the online sextortion case that led to the suicide of 17-year-old James Woods in Ohio. The apprehension occurred nearly four years after Woods died by suicide on November 19, 2022.
Woods, a track star, was convinced by an online predator to share compromising photos of himself. The predator then demanded thousands of dollars, threatening to release the images. Investigators have accused a 23-year-old man of orchestrating the scheme. He was arrested in the Ivory Coast, located in West Africa, and remains in custody there.
"They found James' murderer y'all," Tamia Woods, the teen's mother, announced at a gala honoring her son. Her husband, Tim Woods, told WKYC that hearing the news brought relief and tears, stating, "Our hearts got warm; it felt like a weight was lifted off our shoulders."
The family had reportedly lost hope of identifying the perpetrator, especially after law enforcement warned that overseas crimes could be difficult to prosecute. "I still don't know how to process that because he is a child himself, and he ruined his life, and he ruined my child's life," Tamia Woods told reporters. She emphasized that while the arrest brings accountability, "we still have a missing piece."
Woods had sent a video of himself before his phone was inundated with over 200 messages within 20 hours, demanding payment to prevent the release of the photos and videos. The threats reportedly included suggestions for him to take his own life. Woods sent $100 to the sextortionists, but the threats continued, and he died by suicide the following day.
Streetsboro Police Chief Tricia Wain expressed that the arrest brings "some type of justice" for the Woods family. David Frattare, the Statewide Commander for the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children unit, called it one of his most satisfying moments to deliver good news to a grieving family. While extradition to the United States may not be possible, Frattare noted the arrest sends a message of hope to survivors and families affected by sextortion.
Woods' parents established the Do It For James Foundation to honor their son's memory, raise awareness about the dangers of sextortion, and encourage young people to speak out. "It really put me into a higher gear to make sure that we continue to do it for James. We continue to do social media awareness, sextortion awareness, suicide awareness, all of that to make sure that we keep our children another day," Tamia Woods stated.
According to the FBI, sextortion is a crime where offenders coerce minors into creating explicit material and then demand payment under threat of public release. Predatory individuals are often based in countries outside the United States, including West African nations like Nigeria and the Ivory Coast, as well as countries in Southeast Asia such as the Philippines.
