Armed Citizen Stops Teen Gunman at Oregon Elementary School

An armed citizen confronted and fatally shot a 16-year-old gunman inside Silver Rail Elementary School in Oregon on Thursday, minutes after the teen opened fire and killed three children and a teacher. The intervention by the unidentified community member is credited with preventing additional loss of life.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised the citizen's actions, stating at a press conference that their "heroic interventions" carried a heavy emotional burden and helped stop further tragedy. Bend police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed that the community member had pursued and "engaged" the 16-year-old shooter shortly after the attack began.

The teen suspect had acquired a pump-action shotgun purchased by his mother. The victims included children aged five, eight, and 11, as well as a teacher. A seven-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were also injured and transported to the hospital in critical condition.

The incident began around 12:59 p.m. when a man driving a red Toyota Tacoma pickup truck in the school parking lot observed the teen approaching the building with a long gun. The driver confronted the teenager, who then fired multiple shots at the civilian and his truck, damaging the vehicle. The suspect reportedly discarded his weapon over the school fence before climbing it himself.

Responding officers placed the school on lockdown. The suspect forced his way into the building by shooting at locked doors. The school, which has an enrollment of 400 to 450 students and a staff of over 40, was the scene of chaos as dozens of 911 calls flooded dispatchers.

Officers arrived on the scene within minutes and discovered five deceased individuals, including the suspect. Federal agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting local law enforcement in the investigation.

The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and authorities have not confirmed whether the suspect had any prior connection to the school or its students. City officials expressed heartbreak over the incident, emphasizing that a school should be a safe environment.

In the aftermath, parents rushed to a nearby church to reunite with their children. The school district has canceled all classes and activities for Friday. Community members gathered for a candlelight vigil at Drake Park to honor and remember those affected by the tragedy.

The teen suspect had armed himself with a pump-action shotgun purchased by his mother and killed three children, aged five, eight and 11, as well as a teacher, police said.
