Austin McCollum, a Republican state representative and candidate for Benton County judge, has resigned from his legislative post following his arrest on domestic abuse charges. McCollum was arrested Saturday and resigned from the Arkansas House of Representatives on Wednesday.

His wife, Ragen McCollum, detailed a series of alleged assaults in a petition for an order of protection. She claims that on Saturday, after returning from a wedding, her husband became enraged and began throwing objects at her, including shoes, a deodorant bottle, and a metal hanger. She further alleges that he prevented her from leaving a bedroom, placing his body weight on her back and pressing his knee into the back of her neck, restricting her breathing.

Ragen McCollum states that her husband then punched her multiple times, and after she sustained head injuries from being slammed against a wall and the floor by her hair, he told her to clean herself up.

Authorities responded to the residence and found Austin McCollum intoxicated, with blood on his legs and arms, and injuries consistent with repeatedly punching someone, according to an affidavit. He was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault on a family or household member, false imprisonment in the first degree, and misdemeanor domestic battery.

The petition filed by Ragen McCollum also includes allegations of past abuse, including being pushed down a flight of stairs and being driven into by her husband while their children were in the car. She claims he put her in a headlock, choked her, and dragged her by her hair. She also stated she broke her hand attempting to defend herself.

McCollum, who had been running as a Republican candidate for Benton County judge, was released on $10,000 bond. A hearing for the order of protection is scheduled for August 25, and he is set to be arraigned on September 8. He has not yet confirmed if he will withdraw from the county judge race.

Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Senator Tom Cotton were among those who called for McCollum's resignation. In his resignation letter, McCollum stated, "As I focus on my family, I do not intend to fulfill the remainder of my House term."
