Arizona Officers Reimburse Birthday Gifts After Father Falls Victim to Scam

Two Arizona police officers are being recognized for their quick thinking and generosity after a father was defrauded of his earnings.

Officers Alessandro Figuccio and Tanner Schnieder responded to a report of a scam targeting a local man who worked as a DoorDash delivery driver. The scammer contacted the driver, falsely claiming an issue with his account and instructing him to enter a code at a specific kiosk to reactivate it. After complying, the father discovered his entire paycheck had been stolen.

Upon visiting the father at his home, officers learned the devastating extent of the theft. "He had mentioned that he had just paid rent and his car payment, and he had absolutely nothing left," Officer Figuccio stated. The father's daughter's birthday was the following day, and the stolen funds meant he could not afford a gift.

Body camera footage captured Officer Schnieder offering to take the father to a store to purchase gifts. "Do you want to follow us to the store, and I can get your daughter some stuff and say it was from you?" Schnieder asked. The father, moved by the offer, accepted.

Schnieder, described by Figuccio as a "smooth talker," reassured the father, "I want to take care of it. I don't want you to feel like you are all alone in this because you are not."

At the store, the officers began filling their shopping carts with items the father requested, ultimately purchasing a bright pink bicycle for the two-year-old, despite her being too young to ride it. "We’re like, dude, if I was his kid’s daughter, I’d be happy as heck," Schnieder commented on their motivation.

Using their own money, the officers paid for the gifts and delivered them to the father, who expressed deep emotion and gratitude, asking if he could hug them. "It's rewarding," Figuccio said. Schnieder added, "Yeah, times are tough; stuff gets expensive, but at the end of the day, if I were in that position, which I have been before with my family, if someone's there to help and they can, they will."

The Daily Mail reached out to the Phoenix Police Department and DoorDash for comment.
