An Arizona grandfather is facing the amputation of both his legs after collapsing on a scorching sidewalk in Bullhead City on August 3rd. Grant Siler, 72, suffered severe burns across multiple parts of his body and heat stroke when he fell during a walk in temperatures reaching 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
Siler was unable to get up for at least an hour following his fall. When he was discovered, his body temperature had risen to over 105 degrees. He was transported to a Las Vegas burn intensive care unit, where doctors also diagnosed him with multiple organ shock due to the extreme heat.
During surgery, medical staff determined that the tissue in Siler's right leg was too severely damaged to heal completely. Doctors recommended an above-the-knee amputation for the leg to facilitate faster healing and better pain management. Siler has already undergone two debridement procedures to remove damaged tissue and is experiencing constant pain.
The planned surgery for his right leg amputation is scheduled for August 31st. His family is preparing for significant home modifications, the need for medical equipment, and prosthetic costs. Siler's daughter, Heather Crook, noted that her father, who typically has a high pain tolerance, was in extreme distress, indicating the severity of his injuries.
His wife, Vicki, has been making the nearly 90-minute commute to be with him while continuing to work due to the family's increasing financial strain. The family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover anticipated medical bills, home renovations, and supplies for his recovery.
Siler's ordeal highlights the dangers of extreme heat. In a separate incident, Leslie Caoili, 41, of San Diego, underwent a life-altering recovery after losing all four limbs due to complications from emergency heart surgery in May. She experienced a Type A aortic dissection, and subsequent loss of blood flow to her extremities led to amputations of both legs and hands.
