Archers Star Criticizes BBC's 'Disingenuous' Decision to Relocate Recording Studio

Veteran Archers actress Susie Riddell has publicly criticized the BBC, her employer, describing the decision to move the recording studio for the long-running Radio 4 drama away from Birmingham as "disingenuous." This marks the first time in the show's 75-year history that its recording location is being reconsidered.

Earlier this month, staff were informed that plans for a new £1.5 million specialist studio at the Tea Factory in Digbeth, the BBC's new Birmingham headquarters, had been canceled. While production will still shift to the new headquarters, BBC bosses are reportedly exploring relocating the recording of "The Archers" to an existing studio, likely in London, as part of a broader cost-cutting initiative estimated at £500 million.

Riddell, who has played Tracy Horrobin for 15 years, expressed her views on the Today Programme. "For your listeners who know The Archers know how realistic it sounds, we have to have acoustic flooring and there is a cost that comes with a specialist studio," she stated. She argued that the £1.5 million earmarked for the studio would be a worthwhile investment for a "flagship BBC programme and an iconic British institution" listened to by five million people, representing a small fraction of the £500 million the BBC needs to save.

Riddell is among over 100 cast and crew members, including Dame Judi Dench, who signed a letter protesting the move to Director General Matt Brittin. "We think that it's really important the team stays together. We think it was a bit disingenuous of the BBC," Riddell said, adding that the team had been led to believe for the past two years that they would be moving to a new studio in Birmingham.

She further contended that Birmingham has been consistently overlooked by the BBC and that "The Archers" is the last remaining homegrown program in the region. Riddell warned that cutting production from Birmingham would lead to job losses and that the anticipated cost of transporting the team to another studio, likely London, might ultimately exceed the expense of building the new facility in Birmingham.

The letter to Matt Brittin reportedly drew a parallel between the potential relocation of "The Archers" from the Midlands and the hypothetical departure of other regionally significant soaps, stating, "The Archers leaving the Midlands is akin to Corrie leaving the north-west, or EastEnders the south-east. It is born of the very fabric of the place, and deserves to stay at home."
