Arch Manning's Starting Role at Texas Under Scrutiny After Consecutive Losses

Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning may see his role diminish as redshirt freshman KJ Lacey is expected to receive increased practice repetitions. The change comes after the Longhorns suffered consecutive upset losses to Oklahoma and Florida, prompting coach Steve Sarkisian to re-evaluate the team's offensive performance.

'I just felt like we didn't play good offensive football and we're not playing great offensive football right now, so everything is going to be evaluated,' Sarkisian told reporters. 'It's like, I have to evaluate everything.'

Manning, a highly recruited prospect, completed 14 of 20 passes for 173 yards and one touchdown in the recent loss to Florida. This followed a performance against Oklahoma where he threw two interceptions. Texas' aspirations for a College Football Playoff berth have been significantly impacted by these recent defeats.

Lacey, a four-star recruit from Alabama, is described as a passer with the athleticism to extend plays. His potential increase in playing time signals a shift in strategy as the coaching staff seeks to improve offensive output.

NFL evaluators have noted inconsistencies in Manning's play this season. While he has recorded 11 touchdown passes and a 64 percent completion rate through six games, he has also thrown five interceptions and been sacked 17 times. Scouts have pointed to issues with decision-making, mechanics, and accuracy, though they acknowledge his athletic ability and competitive spirit.

Despite his pedigree as the grandson of Archie Manning and nephew of Peyton and Eli Manning, Arch Manning's status as a projected No. 1 overall pick in the 2027 NFL Draft is now uncertain. Some experts and fans suggest he may return to Texas for his senior season to further develop his skills.
