Texas quarterback Arch Manning has apologized for making an insensitive comment about an AI-generated video that depicted head coach Steve Sarkisian slapping ESPN reporter Holly Rowe. The incident occurred during a press conference on Tuesday, following the Longhorns' victory over Ohio State.
Manning, whose uncles are NFL quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning and whose grandfather is former Ole Miss quarterback Archie Manning Sr., acknowledged that his words and actions were hurtful. "There is nothing funny about it," Manning stated in an Instagram Story post. "It’s easy to say I didn’t mean it, but I know my words and actions were hurtful to a lot of people. I do not take that lightly and am deeply sorry for that."
The AI video, which circulated on social media, was a fabricated depiction of an interaction between Rowe and Sarkisian after the coach appeared to brush off her postgame interview live on television. The doctored clip showed Sarkisian striking Rowe.
Manning specifically addressed Rowe in his apology, stating, "I specifically want to apologize to Holly Rowe for what she has personally had to deal with because of my comments. I have a ton of respect for her and appreciate her showing me grace in this moment. I need to do better and will be more thoughtful going forward."
According to reports, Manning had commented on the AI video during a Monday press conference, calling it "hilarious" and "a good one" while laughing with reporters. He also mentioned that Sarkisian had blown off an interview with ESPN's Laura Rutledge due to technical difficulties at halftime.
Rowe, a veteran ESPN reporter, confirmed that she had spoken with Manning about the situation. "Thank you Arch. I appreciate our conversation about this – which will remain private," Rowe posted on social media, sharing his apology. "Apology accepted. We move forward with respect and kindness for one another."
Manning's apology comes after a significant on-field achievement for his team, which secured a historic comeback victory against the top-ranked Buckeyes. The controversy highlights the scrutiny faced by high-profile athletes and the impact of their public statements, particularly concerning sensitive topics like AI-generated content and depictions of violence.
