Applesauce Recalled Nationwide Over Toxic Mold Contamination

Wakefern Food Corp. has issued an urgent nationwide recall for select containers of Wholesome Pantry Organic Unsweetened Apple Sauce after routine testing by the FDA revealed levels of patulin exceeding safety limits. Patulin is a toxin naturally produced by molds that can grow on damaged or bruised apples.

The recall impacts 23-ounce plastic jars of Wholesome Pantry Organic Unsweetened Apple Sauce with a best-by date of June 16, 2027, and a UPC of 04119005677. These products were distributed through Wakefern supermarkets, including ShopRite, Price Rite Marketplace, The Fresh Grocer, Gourmet Garage, and Fairway Market.

The company stated that the levels of patulin found in the recalled applesauce do not meet Wakefern's quality standards. While the specific species of mold was not identified, Penicillium expansum, which causes blue mold rot, is a common concern in apples and apple products.

Officials warned that the product should not be consumed due to the elevated patulin levels. Experimental studies suggest that high exposure to patulin can negatively affect the gastrointestinal tract, immune system, and nervous system, although human studies are limited. Patulin is known to be highly reactive and can interfere with normal cellular functions.

The FDA has established a limit of 50 parts per billion for patulin in apple juice, concentrates, and related products. The exact levels found in the recalled applesauce were not disclosed.

No illnesses have been associated with this recall. Customers who purchased the affected product are advised to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. No other products sold at these stores are part of this recall.
