Apple Unveils HomeView Smart Hub, Challenging Amazon and Google in Connected Home Market

Apple launched its new HomeView smart-home display on Tuesday, a $299 device featuring facial recognition and artificial intelligence aimed at identifying family members and personalizing their experience. This move marks an intensified effort by Apple to compete with Amazon and Google in the growing connected home market.

HomeView, set to be available starting November 13, boasts a 7-inch touchscreen and an integrated camera capable of recognizing up to six individuals. Upon identification, it can display personalized calendars, messages, and other relevant information. The device will be offered in both tabletop and wall-mounted versions.

Analysts suggest the device's integration with Apple's existing ecosystem, while a strength for current Apple users, could limit its appeal to those invested in competing platforms. "If you’ve invested in Ring cameras, this probably isn’t for you. If you’ve invested in Android phones, this probably isn’t for you," noted Avi Greengart, president and lead analyst at Techsponential.

The HomeView utilizes Apple's upgraded Siri AI assistant for voice commands, task management, and controlling connected appliances. Privacy safeguards are incorporated, requiring a recently unlocked compatible iPhone or iPad to be nearby before sensitive data is displayed. The device also supports features such as monitoring security cameras, adjusting thermostats, controlling lighting, and making FaceTime calls.

Apple's new HomeView uses facial recognition to identify up to six household members and display personalized information.

Beyond the HomeView, Apple also announced an updated $299 4K Apple TV with built-in microphones for hands-free Siri commands. This streaming device, also launching November 13, includes a remote with a locator function. A previous model started at $199.

The company also refreshed its HomePod mini speaker, now the HomePod mini 2, priced at $149 and available October 30. This iteration features an upgraded S10 chip and a new lighting system called Sound Glow, which illuminates the speaker's surface with colors that change based on album artwork or ambient sounds. The previous HomePod mini was priced at $129.

The $299 HomeView features a 7-inch touchscreen that lets users control lighting, adjust thermostats and monitor security cameras.

Apple is collaborating with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric on a range of connected-home accessories, including security cameras, door locks, and smart thermostats, scheduled to ship in December. These accessories will be configurable via an iPhone without requiring separate accounts or applications.

Compared to competitors, the HomeView carries a premium price point, with Amazon's Echo Show 8 at $179.99 and Google's Nest Hub at $99.99. Greengart suggested that Apple's existing customer base, accustomed to higher prices and invested in the Apple ecosystem, may find the cost justifiable. He also posited that Apple's move could provide rivals with an opportunity to increase their own pricing.

HomeView uses Apple's Siri AI assistant to answer questions, manage household tasks and operate connected devices.

Apple is emphasizing deeper integration with its existing devices, personalized AI features, and privacy protections as key selling points for the new hardware, aiming to attract customers willing to pay a premium for these capabilities. Preorders for HomeView began Tuesday.
