Apple Set to Launch Touchscreen MacBooks Amid Product Blitz

Apple is poised to unveil its first MacBooks featuring touchscreens on Wednesday, a move that signals a departure from its historical resistance to the technology. This launch follows a series of significant product introductions by the company in the lead-up to the critical holiday shopping season.

The event, scheduled to take place in Los Angeles, comes after Apple introduced its folding iPhone, Duo, at its Silicon Valley headquarters in September and a smart home hub in New York earlier this month. While these previous releases aimed to explore new market segments for Apple, the upcoming event in Los Angeles is expected to address the long-standing debate about integrating touchscreens, a feature mainstreamed by Apple's own iPhones and iPads, into its oldest product line.

Historically, Apple executives, including the late Steve Jobs, expressed reservations about touchscreens on laptops. Jobs described them in 2010 as “ergonomically terrible,” and then-CEO Tim Cook likened such devices in 2012 to combining a toaster and a refrigerator. John Ternus, now Apple’s CEO, had previously argued that the iPad lineup already served as Apple's touchscreen computer offering.

However, the landscape has evolved, with touchscreens becoming a common feature on Windows devices for over a decade. As the iPhone approaches its 20th anniversary, a new generation of consumers is accustomed to and expects touch-responsive screens across their devices. Analyst Anshel Sag of Moor Insights & Strategy commented that Apple’s previous stance against touch integration was likely an error, and the company is now adapting to this reality.

“I believe they were always wrong on pushing back on touch, and this is the long arm of reality setting in,” Sag said. “Some things are purely inevitable.”

The consumer reception to touch-enabled MacBooks will be a key factor for Apple. The company has recently experienced an increase in Mac sales, driven by tech enthusiasts and businesses utilizing the machines for on-device AI tasks. Despite the introduction of an upgraded MacBook Pro with a new M6 chip this week, reports indicate that the planned touchscreen models will utilize existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, which are already available in current MacBook Pro models. This suggests that the performance of the new touchscreen laptops may not offer a significant leap over existing configurations.

Prominent tech commentator Jason Calacanis noted on X that consumer demand is primarily focused on increased memory and better processors for local AI models, rather than touch functionality alone.
