Apple Maps has renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America for users in the United States, a change prompted by an executive order from President Donald Trump amid an ongoing trade dispute with Canada. Users in Canada continue to see the body of water identified as Lake Ontario.
The alteration follows the collapse of trade talks between the two North American nations late last month, after which Washington imposed new 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. Canada has vowed to implement retaliatory tariffs on a dollar-for-dollar basis.
Apple's decision mirrors a similar move by Google Maps, which also adjusted its display for U.S. users and subsequently faced criticism on social media. The office of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reportedly withdrew from the trade negotiations, citing what it described as unacceptable demands from the U.S. Carney has publicly criticized Washington's negotiation tactics, stating that serious discussions can only resume when the U.S. demonstrates a commitment to constructive dialogue.
