Apparent human remains were discovered Tuesday in a chimney at a New York City public school located in Queens. The finding occurred during the school's summer break.
Authorities were alerted to the discovery around 9 a.m. at P.S./I.S. 113 Anthony J. Pranzo, which serves approximately 750 students from prekindergarten through eighth grade. Police stated that no students or staff were present in the building at the time of the discovery, as the last day of school for the city's education system was the preceding Friday. However, records indicate that contractors had been performing work in the building recently, including updates to wiring and the hot water heating system.
The investigation into how the remains got there and how long they may have been present is ongoing. The city's medical examiner's office will work to determine the cause of death. Messages sent to the school principal and the city Department of Education seeking comment remained unanswered as of Tuesday. A call to the school also went unanswered.
