Apollo Global Management Takes 16% Stake in Yankees, Hal Steinbrenner Assures No Sale of Team

Private equity firm Apollo Global Management has acquired a 16 percent stake in the New York Yankees, a significant investment that Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner stated will bolster the franchise's long-term financial stability without leading to a sale of the team.

Steinbrenner addressed the implications of the $2.6 billion financing deal during a post-mortem press conference for the 2026 season. He emphasized that the investment from Apollo is not a precursor to selling the team but rather a strategic move to secure financial resilience for future generations.

"The whole goal of the Apollo deal was to bring in capital into the company that would be there for us to give us more financial stability for years and years to come, including the years when I’m out of here and the third generation is running the team," Steinbrenner explained. He noted that Apollo's principals understood this objective from the outset and accepted limited partner status, which is uncommon for private equity firms.

As part of the agreement, Apollo Sports Capital CEO Al Tylis will join the Yankee Global Enterprise board. However, Steinbrenner clarified that this does not grant Apollo day-to-day operational control. "Zero rights, zero control of day-to-day operations, nothing whatsoever," Steinbrenner stated, underscoring that Apollo's rights are on par with those of other limited partners.

In August, it was reported that Apollo received an initial 8 percent stake, with an additional 8 percent in preferred stock convertible to equity in four years. Major League Baseball owners recently voted to increase the allowable stake for private equity groups to 20 percent, provided it does not exceed the controlling owner's share.

The Steinbrenner family has held ownership of the Yankees since 1973, with Hal Steinbrenner taking over daily operations in 2008. The recent investment signals a strategy to maintain the franchise's financial footing while preserving the existing ownership structure.
