AOC Weighs 2028 White House or Senate Bid Post-Midterms

New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stated that she is awaiting the outcome of the midterm elections before considering a potential run for the US Senate or the White House. "I will be making any of those considerations after the midterms," Ocasio-Cortez told The Post. She plans to actively support House and Senate candidates during the midterm election cycle, indicating that "we'll learn a lot in November."

This year's midterms feature numerous progressive candidates on the ballot, including Abdul El-Sayed for Michigan's Senate race, Angie Nixon in Florida's Senate contest, and House candidates like Darializa Avila Chevalier in New York and Melat Kiros in Colorado, who have already won primary races against incumbent Democrats.

Despite the midterm outcomes, a growing number of Democrats view the four-term congresswoman as a potential frontrunner for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination. Factors cited include her significant name recognition, fundraising capabilities, and a public sentiment favoring a candidate perceived as a fighter against the established system. One Democratic official compared her communication skills to those of former President Barack Obama, noting her ability to simplify complex ideas for broader appeal.

Strategists observe parallels between the current anti-establishment sentiment and the 2016 election, though the current anger is more directed at billionaires, Big Tech, and corporate America. Ocasio-Cortez, alongside Sen. Bernie Sanders, has been campaigning on an anti-oligarchy platform since March 2025, drawing large crowds in various districts.

Potential shifts in the Democratic Party's primary calendar could also benefit Ocasio-Cortez. The sequence of early states is set to begin with South Carolina, followed by New Hampshire and then Nevada. South Carolina and Nevada feature significant Black and Latino voting populations and strong union presence, potentially offering a more favorable electorate than the historically white early states.

A recent Bowling Green State University/YouGov poll showed Ocasio-Cortez gaining traction for the 2028 race, tied with California Gov. Gavin Newsom for third place, behind former Vice President Kamala Harris and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Republicans have also begun targeting Ocasio-Cortez, with Vice President JD Vance recently criticizing her during a campaign event in Iowa.

Ocasio-Cortez is expected to campaign extensively in the coming months, which could further enhance her public profile and refine her political messaging. Activists and donors are reportedly prepared to support her future endeavors, whether in a presidential bid or a challenge against Sen. Chuck Schumer for his New York Senate seat. Ocasio-Cortez and her team are also expected to allocate resources to support Democratic candidates in New York, bolstering her standing within the state and maintaining Senate options.

Streamer Hasan Piker, who has expressed controversial views, stated he would campaign for Ocasio-Cortez if asked. LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, a significant Democratic donor, has also indicated potential support, viewing Ocasio-Cortez as more pragmatic than often perceived.
