AOC Signals 2028 Ambitions, Declares She Won't Defer to Harris or Others
The New York Democrat stated that her decision on a presidential bid would not be influenced by deference to other potential candidates.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has indicated that she would not step aside for any other potential presidential candidates in 2028, signaling her own White House ambitions and challenging the Democratic establishment. When asked by The New York Times about factors influencing a potential presidential run, Ocasio-Cortez stated, "I don’t think that my decisions would come down to deference."
The 36-year-old New York Democrat, the youngest woman elected to Congress, has not yet announced a presidential campaign, but her remarks suggest she is not waiting for approval from party leaders or potential primary rivals. This stance could place her in direct competition with Vice President Kamala Harris, who is considered a possible contender for the 2028 nomination.
While California Gov. Gavin Newsom has publicly stated he would not challenge Harris if she decides to run, Ocasio-Cortez appears to be charting a different course. She has also suggested other political avenues are under consideration, including a potential challenge to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for his New York seat, or reelection to the House of Representatives.
Ocasio-Cortez acknowledged that a presidential campaign carries significant personal risk. "It’s very all or nothing," she told The New York Times. "If I were to run in this cycle, and not win, I would be done." She added that she is not opposed to potentially giving up her House seat, or even leaving elected office altogether if a presidential bid fails, but that such a decision would need to be "worth it."
The congresswoman also noted the fleeting nature of political opportunities, remarking, "There’s an argument that some make that this is a very unique political window and, oftentimes in politics, you do only get one shot."
Ocasio-Cortez's name has been appearing with increasing frequency in early 2028 Democratic polling and prediction markets. A September national poll placed her tied with Gavin Newsom, behind Harris and Pete Buttigieg. Another earlier survey showed Ocasio-Cortez at 26% among respondents considering potential Democratic contenders. Prediction markets also show Ocasio-Cortez as a notable possibility for the 2028 nomination.
Ocasio-Cortez has previously stated her intention to decide on a potential presidential bid after the November midterm elections.
