Antonelli Dominates US Grand Prix, Title Within Reach

Kimi Antonelli achieved a dominant victory at the United States Grand Prix, but will have to wait to secure his first world title. The 20-year-old Italian now leads his Mercedes teammate George Russell by 123 points following his win at the Circuit of the Americas.

Antonelli is poised to be crowned champion in Mexico City next weekend. He will clinch the title as long as he does not lose more than 23 points to Russell or 24 points to Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton. This means a ninth-place finish would be sufficient even if Russell wins the race, and a tenth-place finish would be enough if Hamilton is victorious. If neither Russell nor Hamilton wins, Antonelli will be champion regardless of his finishing position.

Antonelli demonstrated his season-long dominance by controlling the race from the outset. An excellent start, coupled with a fierce battle for second place between Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc on the opening lap, allowed Antonelli to build a lead of over two seconds by the end of the first lap. He maintained this advantage throughout the race.

Mercides opted for medium tires at the start, while Leclerc and the Red Bulls of Verstappen and Isack Hadjar began on soft tires. Antonelli's strategic choice enabled a one-stop race strategy, which contrasted with his competitors' two-stop approaches, further highlighting his superiority. He ultimately finished the race 16 seconds ahead of Leclerc.

The victory also served as a validation for the Mercedes upgrade package introduced two races prior in Malaysia. Despite initially hindering performance, subsequent work has refined the package, making it demonstrably faster than the previous specification, though it remains challenging to optimize.

"It was the result we needed," Antonelli stated. "All this time putting work on the new package and finally seeing the result was very pleasant, perfect strategy to call the one-stop."

Reflecting on the championship, he added, "I know we are very close. We try to finish on a high and hopefully we can clinch it very soon."
