Antonelli Calls Azerbaijan Qualifying Crash 'Stupid' and 'Good Way to Come Back to Earth'

Kimi Antonelli, the current championship leader, has described his crash during qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix as "stupid" and "a good way to come back to earth." The Mercedes driver will start Saturday's race from 16th on the grid after making contact with a wall.

Antonelli's teammate George Russell, his closest challenger in the title race, secured pole position with a dominant performance. Antonelli admitted his mistake was unnecessary, stating, "I misjudged with the grip being so different compared to the first lap. I hit the wall. Unnecessary mistake early on."

He added, "So it's a good way to come back to earth and to remind myself I need to be on top of it every time because otherwise I do these mistakes and a very stupid one." Antonelli expressed that he was "very mad about it."

The 20-year-old Italian driver has faced challenges throughout the weekend, losing practice time due to a reliability issue. A hydraulic leak in his Mercedes during the first practice session limited his track time, as the car was not ready until halfway through the second session. He was 0.252 seconds behind Russell in final practice and made his error on his second flying lap in qualifying.

Antonelli's crash echoes a turning point in last year's Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where Oscar Piastri, who was leading the championship at the time, crashed in qualifying and then again on the first lap of the race, derailing his season.

Russell, who is 81 points behind Antonelli in the championship, now has an opportunity to close the gap. Despite this, Russell has expressed a resigned outlook on the title race but acknowledged Antonelli's resilience. He recalled Antonelli's victory at the Italian Grand Prix, where he started 19th due to a penalty, noting, "You can't discount Kimi. You know, started 19th in Monza and now he's in 16th, so, yeah, he should be leading by a few laps early this time."

Russell also commented that this was Antonelli's first significant mistake in a competitive session this season, suggesting that while mistakes are part of championship campaigns, he remains focused on his own performance. "I still keep on believing and keep on fighting until it isn't possible any more. But I don't feel any pressure," Russell said.

Russell qualified with a significant margin of 0.837 seconds over second-placed Charles Leclerc of Ferrari and third-placed Piastri. The Baku street circuit is known for its long straight and overtaking opportunities, often leading to eventful races.

Regarding potential challengers, Russell identified Max Verstappen of Red Bull, who qualified eighth, as a threat. Verstappen experienced technical difficulties during qualifying, including an engine issue and a battery problem that compromised his final laps. "The whole qualifying was not how it should be," Verstappen stated. "So you're on the back foot... But when you have that many issues you also don't deserve to be there. We need to be more robust and we need to be on top of these things."
