Sandra Bloodworth, a founding member of Socialist Alternative and a figure in the High School Anti-Capitalists network, has drawn attention for past comments advocating for the abolition of age of consent laws. These views were articulated in a 2005 article published on the Socialist Alternative website.

In the article, Bloodworth argued that age of consent laws do not prevent abuse and questioned their effectiveness as a protective measure. She contended that such laws are arbitrary government restrictions and that existing laws against assault are sufficient. Bloodworth wrote that "abolishing the age of consent would be an even better step to take."

Socialist Alternative has stated that it does not endorse the article or support repealing age of consent laws. A spokesperson told the Daily Mail, "Socialist Alternative does not endorse this article, nor do we support repealing the age of consent laws." The organization did not comment on Bloodworth's ongoing involvement or data management practices related to student sign-ups.

Victorian Socialists, another group with influence from Socialist Alternative, stated they were unaware of the article and would consider any suggestion that they advocate for the abolition of age of consent laws to be libelous.

Bloodworth remains active in Socialist Alternative, speaking at events and contributing to the publication Red Flag. She has also participated in events with Victorian Socialists and was present at a pro-Palestine encampment at La Trobe University in 2024.

Socialist Alternative and Victorian Socialists were central organizers of recent nationwide "Students Say No to Hanson" protests on August 13, where thousands of high school and university students walked out in opposition to One Nation leader Pauline Hanson. Organizers are planning further demonstrations for September.

One undergraduate involved in university politics, speaking anonymously to the Daily Mail, indicated that members of Socialist Alternative have been reluctant to condemn Bloodworth's past comments. The student stated that when confronted with the 2005 article during student elections, members became defensive and refused to condemn her views, instead defending her points about the oppression of children through sexuality.

During the August student protests, some controversial remarks were made by participants, including one student heard saying of Pauline Hanson, "I'd shoot her... kill her." These comments were condemned by One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce.

Ms Bloodworth remains active within Victorian Socialists and was a guest speaker at a campaign launch in 2022
