Anthropic to Dedicate 5% of Shares to Public Benefit Fund
AI giant Anthropic plans to establish a new public benefit fund, holding 5% of its shares, with potential for future increases based on valuation growth.
Anthropic announced Sunday its intention to allocate 5% of its shares to a newly formed public benefit fund, pending stockholder approval. This stake could grow as the artificial intelligence company's valuation increases.
The proposed fund will operate as a wholly owned limited liability company. Anthropic's board may decide to allocate an additional 2% of the company's shares to the fund for every 50% rise in its value beyond an undisclosed baseline.
The Anthropic Public Benefit Fund is designed to support various initiatives, including charitable donations, direct distributions to specific communities, and programs addressing the impact of artificial intelligence on workers. The company stated that the fund will not be used for lobbying or political contributions in the United States or internationally.
This move comes as Anthropic, known for its Claude AI assistant, prepares for a significant initial public offering (IPO). The company intends to operate as a public benefit corporation, a legal structure that obligates its management to consider broader societal interests alongside profitability.
Anthropic has emphasized its commitment to safety in AI development. In its IPO prospectus, the company highlighted potential risks associated with its AI models, including the possibility of developing "self-preserving behaviors," according to a September report. The company plans to release further details regarding the fund's governance, structure, and the valuation thresholds for share increases in the coming months. A public benefit report detailing progress toward its mission is also planned.
