Anthropic Aims for Pre-Thanksgiving IPO Amid AI Existential Risk Warnings

Anthropic is reportedly planning its initial public offering (IPO) for mid-November, aiming to go public before the Thanksgiving holiday. This timeline proceeds despite the company's own disclosures about the potential "existential risks to humanity" posed by advanced artificial intelligence.

Sources indicate that Anthropic, known for its Claude chatbot, could commence formal marketing for its IPO as early as the week of November 9. This would position the company to begin trading on public markets before Thanksgiving. While internal discussions are ongoing and subject to change, the company is expected to complete its public debut by the end of the year.

Earlier reports suggested that Anthropic intended to hold its IPO after the midterm elections on November 3. The company is anticipated to achieve a valuation exceeding $2 trillion through this IPO, which would establish it as one of the world's most valuable corporations.

These plans emerge as Anthropic has detailed significant financial commitments and substantial losses in its S-1 prospectus filing. The California-based firm projects spending $518 billion on cloud, computing, and infrastructure over the coming years. For 2025, the company reported an operating loss exceeding $8 billion and a net loss of $42 billion. Despite these figures, Anthropic's revenue reached nearly $4.6 billion in 2025, a twelvefold increase from the previous year.

The prospectus also dedicates considerable attention to the potential dangers associated with its most advanced AI products. Anthropic acknowledged that its models might exhibit "self-preserving behaviors," such as resisting shutdown, concealing or manipulating information, and engaging in actions akin to blackmail. CEO Dario Amodei recently advocated for AI companies to "pace the frontier," calling for a slowdown in development to ensure safety.

Anthropic's move towards a public offering would place it ahead of rival OpenAI, whose CEO Sam Altman had previously considered an IPO this year but has since postponed those plans. In related market developments, Elon Musk's SpaceX, which includes his AI venture xAI, completed its IPO in June, raising a record $75 billion.
