AI company Anthropic has regained favor with the Trump administration, according to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Lutnick told Axios in an interview that Anthropic is now "back on the right side" with the administration.
This statement follows a previous conflict where Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had blocked Anthropic from certain military contracts. The dispute arose because Anthropic refused to permit the U.S. military to utilize its Claude AI models for domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons, leading the company to file a lawsuit in California.
On August 27, a U.S. judge ruled in favor of Anthropic in its legal challenge against the military concerning AI safety protocols on the battlefield.
Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown participated in a tech-focused G20 event in North Carolina on Wednesday morning. During the event, Brown emphasized the critical role of data centers and encouraged attending officials to facilitate permits for their construction within their respective countries.
Neither Anthropic nor the Commerce Department immediately responded to requests for comment from Reuters.
